Biography
René Sandoval: bassplayer, composer and educator was born in Valparaíso, Chile. He moved to Sweden in the middles 80´s , where he gots studies in music at Fridhem Folkhögskola in Svalöv, (Swe.) The Malmoe Music Conservatory,( Swe.) and finally at the Universidad de Chile in Santiago, (Ch.)
Influenced by the south american music traditions and the afroamerican jazz tradition, he has been professionally involved in differents kinds of musicprojects since 1990, such as afrocuban, brasilian, folk and pop music.
RS have been on tours around Scandinavia, Germany, Spain, Uruguay, Argentina, Bolivia & Chile and participated in several recordings of popular music: jazz, latin, pop, worldmusic.
1990
RS went to Cuba to study afrocuban music whit Carlitos del Puerto (bassplayer of the super group/grammy winners IRAKERE), discovering and researching the differents afrocuban rythms and the clave.
1992-1994
24 years old RS began to study music at Fridhem Folkhögskola, there he learns the basics of bass playing & improvisation. He began to compose/arrange music for small ensembles and picked up the double bass.
1994-1998
RS integrated the Jazz Department at the Malmoe Music Conservatory, Lunds University, achiving a Fine Arts in Music Education degree, he studied doublebass, jazz theory, arranging, composing among others.
1999
RS studied Music Produccion at the Malmoe Music Conservatory.
1999-2002
RS studied Musicology at Universidad de Chile and start to freelance and teaching on a regular basis in Santiago. Here he had the oportunitty to play as a sideman for such luminaries like: Valery Pomovarev (Trp. Jazz Messengers) Cliff Adams (Trb. Kool & the Gang) and the new yorkers Claudia Acuña (Voc.) and Ingrid Jenssen (Trp.) among others.
RS allso had the oportunity to play whit fine southamerican players like; Carlos Aguirre,(Pi. Argentina) Daniel Lencina (Trp. Uruguay), Alejandro Espinoza (Dr. Chile), and others.
2001
RS works as Artistic Director of the Internacional Jazz Festival Providencia Jazz in Santiago, Chile.
2002
Back in Sweden Sandoval have been involved in several music projects with swedish collegues: Ludvig Berghe, Zoltan Csörsz , Johan Hörlen, Mattias Carlsson, Karl Martin Almqvist, and others.
